Which dumpling
are you ordering?
The filling, wrapper and cooking method each tell you something different. “Soup dumpling” and “dumpling soup” are especially easy to confuse.

A soup dumpling contains soup inside its wrapper. Wonton soup serves wontons in a bowl of broth. Steamed and pan-fried describe preparation, not a guaranteed filling.
Read the name in three parts
| Name | Format | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Xiao long bao / soup dumplings | Dumplings with liquid inside; commonly steamed. | Pork, crab-and-pork, or another listed filling. |
| Wontons | Filled wrappers served in soup or another sauce, depending on the item. | Whether noodles are included in the bowl. |
| Har gow | Steamed shrimp dumplings with a translucent wrapper. | The particular filling and piece count. |
| Siu mai / shumai | Open-topped steamed dumplings. | Pork and shrimp are common Cantonese fillings; variations exist. |

Steamed versus pan-fried
E Noodle lists both steamed and pan-fried pork-and-chive dumplings. That lets you compare the same stated filling with a different exterior. Pan-frying adds a browned surface; a steamed wrapper does not have that fried base.

Soup inside or soup outside?
Noodle Village’s owner describes its xiao long bao as pork dumplings with broth enclosed inside. A wonton noodle soup is a larger bowl with noodles and broth around the wontons. Read the complete title before ordering.

Dim sum is the wider category
Some dumplings are dim sum, but the dim sum table also includes buns, rice rolls and other small dishes. A restaurant may put soup dumplings in a separate section without changing the dish itself.
A useful mixed order
- Choose different wrappers or methods, rather than three similar names.
- Compare the filling and piece count before ordering for a group.
- If you want noodles, select an item that explicitly includes them.
- Give a hot soup dumpling a moment to cool; its liquid is inside.
Broth inside, outside, or no soup in the title?

Nom Wah’s PDF does not state piece counts. Dim Sum Go Go separately specifies three pork soup dumplings for $6.95. A count from one menu cannot fill the missing count in another.
